The perfect picture of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris is an illusive concept. It probably does not exist. Last year Ruth and I saw a magnificent picture of Notre-Dame by Damien Vassart in a Paris print shop taken from Quai d’Orléans on L’Isle Saint-Louis.
Why spend so much money on someone else’s photo? Here we are in Paris with our own camera. Why not try to get our own perfect picture? So, off we went to find the place from where Damien Vassart took that beautiful photo.
Eventually, we found the exact spot, but our efforts were pretty woeful as you can see. It was late, it was dark, and we were cold. Well, that’s our excuse!
Unfortunately, our stay in Paris was drawing to a close, so we decided to come back on our next trip. But the pull of the original was just too great. It now hangs proudly in our living room.
So here we are again in Paris looking for that perfect picture of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris. Only this time we find ourselves on Quai de Montebello, the iconic setting for the perfect picture of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris.
However, finding space between the endless booths of Les Bouquinistes (booksellers) and elbowing tourists out-of-the-way proved challenging. This was not the place nor the time to set up a tripod.
I eventually found a spot near the graffiti-covered (aka love-locks) Pont de l’Archevêché where I could brace the camera on the stone wall. The ideal time for the perfect picture is the golden hour, but getting out of bed before dawn is not something that I relish. So we settled for the afternoon at 3 pm.
Nevertheless, we came up with a couple of reasonable attempts, and I am sure we will return soon to try to capture that perfect picture.
